BILL'S BULLETIN

Strengthening Community

Dear Friends,

A new year is upon us and the YMCA is grateful to so many that have supported our cause and provided an opportunity to serve the Frisco community since 1991. While we celebrate the past successes we have witnessed over the years, it only seems appropriate to take this opportunity to acknowledge those individuals who make it all possible year in and year out.

At the Y, strengthening the community is our cause. We do this through programs that focus on Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility. We are able to do this because our work is supported, at every turn, by many loving, capable and committed individuals. Our Y is blessed to have volunteers that provide support and guidance as we continue to meet the demands of a growing community.

We also have staff that work tirelessly to provide encouragement and a "hand up" to those in need. Our work is not easy but it is made easier by the "many hands" working to assure our success.

What is success - our success is measured by a child learning a new skill; providing financial assistance to those less fortunate; an adult learning how to live a healthier; and working together with other community organizations to meet pressing needs.

I am reminded of a commonly used adage "many hands make for light work". I would therefore like to take this opportunity to thank our Board of Managers, program volunteers and staff members who have worked diligently to make possible the great work your Frisco Y does to "Strengthen the Foundation of Community".

PROVIDING MOTIVATION

Personal Trainer of the Month

Becoming a certified personal trainer evolved out of my own passion for working out and pursuing a healthy and happy lifestyle.

I love strength training and a great high-intensity workout while incorporating mobility work and yoga, too. Yet, after having babies and a back surgery, I understand returning to the gym "out of shape" or recovering from an injury.

So, I am passionate about assisting others who are new or returning to fitness for any reason. I love helping clients feel comfortable in the gym and excited about meeting their own goals.

It's never to late to benefit from pursuing health and fitness! My desire is to help you to feel confident and proud about the work you do to get healthy and strong and definitely to have some fun along the way.

LOOKING OUT FOR YOU

Message from Texas Scottish Rite Hospital

Take-home tips from Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children

Love to play. Not just win.

In the pre-teen years, athletes progress to a more competitive sport environment, and the pressures really start to grow. Winning, or being the best, becomes more important as elite team tryouts and college scholarship dreams come into play.

According to TSRHC Sport Psychologist, Dr. Erica Force, this is the window of time where athletes often begin to drop out of sports.

To encourage continued participation in sports, it is important for parents to foster a positive and fun sport environment. Parents can help their kids focus on more than just results of the competition by focusing on effort and lessons learned. Here are some ideas to help encourage a life-long love of sports:

-           Be a good listener and offer encouragement regardless of the outcome of a game

-           Keep your own emotions under control

-           Ask about their experience while playing:

Did you put forth your best effort? Did you have fun?

Did you help your team? Were you a good sport?

STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY

Bonnie's Bulletin

Happy New Year!!! I hope all of you are as excited as I am about 2016. I want to go over some of my vision for the JER Chilton YMCA this year.

Our motto this year will be "Over the Top". We want to provide "over the top" service, programs, membership experience and excellence in all areas. We will work very hard to make sure that happens.

Also, I'm excited about some new additions we've made for the new year.

I'm excited about our.... NEW WELLNESS DIRECTOR - Jude McCarthy. I think Jude will continue the great work that has been done by Sharyn Hightower and her staff. In addition, I think Jude will be able to dedicate his time to our equipment, exercise classes, fitness floor staff and help our membership experience go to the next level.

I'm excited about our... NEW EXERCISE SCHEDULE. I think we've needed to try some new classes and move some classes around for a while so for the month of January that is what we are doing. I've already visited a few of the new classes and I think you are going to like them. Please let us know what you think.

I'm excited about our CHRISTIAN EMPHASIS COMMITTEE we are starting this month. I don't know if you are aware, but the YMCA, (Young Men's Christian Association), was founded on Christian values and we will do everything in our power at the JER Chilton YMCA at Rockwall to stay true to those values. Our mission statement is: To put Christian values into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

I love being a part of such a great Community that cares so much about others. Please come see me, my door is always open!

~ Bonnie LaVielle, Executive Director, J.E.R. Chilton YMCA at Rockwall
