Plano Family YMCA Spring sports registration ending soon

Springtime has already begun to blossom at the Plano Family YMCA as kids get ready for what’s ramping up to be a stellar Spring sports season.

Registration is underway for Spring League Basketball (boys and girls ages 3-12), and teams are filling up quickly but signup continues through Saturday, Feb. 28.

Registration for Spring League Soccer is also going on through Saturday, Feb. 28. The Outdoor Soccer Program at the Plano Y features five different age divisions (all Coed) and no tryouts are necessary, so all kids are welcome to come and play games in a safe, fun and exciting environment.

And, of course, it just wouldn’t be Spring at the Plano Y without its excellent Spring Small Fry T-Ball program! The program allows parents to teach their 3- or 4-year old all the knowledge and skills necessary to enhance their progress in T-Ball, and sports officials and coaches will also be on hand to guide and help as well. The program includes six sessions held at 7 p.m. on Thursdays starting March 26 and ending April 30 at the Plano YMCA. A Spring T-Ball Clinic for kids ages 5-8 will also be held those same dates and times, and is the perfect opportunity for experienced players to come hone their skills and for first timers to come learn the basics.

The Plano Y also invites boys grades 3-5 to hit the ground running on the road to a healthy and fulfilling lifestyle with STRIDE, a fun and exciting fitness program designed to encourage boys to exhibit excellence in character in all aspects of their lives.

The eight-week program includes lessons covering topics such as goal setting, teamwork and making a difference, as well as fun running workouts so the boys can successfully complete a 5K at the end of the season. The program begins Sunday, March 1 and meets twice a week. Registration forms are available at the Welcome Center.

The Plano Y also offers the Girls on the Run program, an experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. The 10-week program meets twice a week (4:30- 6 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays) and challenges and encourages girls - no matter what their fitness level - with warmups, running workouts and games that teach important life skills. The sessions focus on life missions in areas such as physical health, respecting yourself and others, nutrition, gratitude, teamwork and community involvement. The girls choose and conduct a community impact project, and the class will complete a 5K on May 9, 2015. For more info, visit gotrdfw.org or call the Y at 214-705-9459.

The Adventure Guides and Princesses program will also be kicking off its Derby Day on Saturday, Feb. 28 at the Plano Y. The event allows kids to build a custom pinewood derby car to race in the event. Registration is open until Wednesday, Feb. 25 and is available at the Plano Y, 3300 McDermott Road. All derby cars participating in the race must be purchased at the Plano Y.
