Planning A Spring Garden Classes To Be Offered

Planning a Spring Garden

Saturday, February 25 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

OR Tuesday, February 28 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Experienced gardeners know that spring is a fun but challenging season for gardening.  The extremes in Texas weather is just one of the tests of planting a spring garden.  There is a short window of weeks between the last freeze date and the first onset of the hot Texas summer.  February is the month to make plans and get ready for a successful spring garden.

So, you want to grow vegetables and/or ornamentals during the North Central Texas spring season.   Where do you start? Simply looking at seed packets in catalogs or transplants at local nurseries will not get the job done. Whether you are planting daisies or tomatoes, this class has been developed for beginning gardeners and will be presented by Janie Squier, a certified Master Gardener volunteer.  Participants in the class will not only learn about bed and soil preparation, but also about composting, mulching and other steps to success.  How to plant seeds and transplants correctly will also be demonstrated.

Due to the popularity of the garden class series, two sessions of the Spring Garden class will be held.  The first class will be on Saturday, February 25, from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m.  The second class has been scheduled for Tuesday, February 28 from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m.  Both classes are the same and will be held at the Rockwall County Extension Office located at 915 E. Whitmore Street, Suite B  The registration fee is $15.00.  Pre-registration is required and is limited to 20 participants for each class.   A minimum number of participants must be paid and pre-registered by 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 22.   A confirmation email will be sent to the registered class participants for the 2 classes by February 23.  NOTE:  Due to the limited classroom space, these classes are for adults.  No childcare is available so please make arrangements before attending class.

The $15.00 registration fee will cover speakers’ expenses, class materials and handouts.  You can pay and preregister by mail or by delivering your completed registration form and class fee to the Rockwall County Extension Office, 915 Whitmore, Suite B, Rockwall, Texas  75087.  For more information call the Extension Office at 972-204-7660.
