Billie Stevenson Elementary hosted the 2nd Annual Fate DPS Bike Safety Rally on Saturday, September 12. The event was co-founded by one of Stevenson’s Cubs, Gage Duke, who is now a fourth grader at Billie Stevenson and BSE School Resource Officer, Officer Kissane of the Fate DPS.

This years event was a HUGE success. Students from Utley, Hays, Hartman and Billie Stevenson all enjoyed this year’s event.  In addition to learning about bike safety, the participants were able to register their bikes with Fate DPS, have their bikes inspected for any safety hazards, have their helmets properly fitted or given a free helmet, and compete in bike safety challenges set up on the campus. This year the event also provided free hot dogs, popsicles, and Officer Kissane arranged for a Lifeteam Air-Evac helicopter  to land on campus during the event. Participants were able to explore the inside of the helicopter and talk to the flight crew about the importance of injury prevention.

Gage Duke, now a 4th grader at BSE is dedicated to promoting the use of bicycle helmets for every rider every time they ride. In addition to promoting helmet use on his campus, he had the idea to start a nonprofit to further reach into the community to raise awareness. This year, JustCuzHelmetsMatter.Org was formed in memory of Gage’s very own “Cuz,” Allen Hall, who was struck and killed while riding his bike to school in 2012.

Stevenson Elementary is already gearing up for next year’s 3rd annual Fate DPS Bike Safety Rally!

Billie Stevenson herself has attended both of the bike safety days at BSE, and says that they are “wonderful!”
