While thinking about cycles, third and fourth graders at Nebbie Williams Elementary School took up a study of their own. They wanted to learn more about hurricanes. As a result of their product based learning they produced a Haunted Hurricane, transforming a classroom into a live hurricane. As children walked in, they were guided on a tour to different stations demonstrating the information that they learned.
The stations were as follows:
1. Floating umbrella and fan- stages of a hurricane
2. Weather station-instruments to predict and follow a hurricane
3. Map- tracking their fantasy hurricane from the coast of Africa
4. Their hurricane related inventions-
H.A.S a floating thermometer to predict hurricane causing temperatures
C.C.C. A kid care kid, stuff for a child who has lost their home
Ice-in-a-tor a machine designed to cool the ocean using ice. While researching this, Brock
Brewer found and contacted Professor Stephen Salter in Scotland. Professor Salter is
working with Bill Gates to produce a design of floating tires that use salt to help cool the
ocean and suppress hurricanes.
5. A Safe House- a home made of cardboard used to demonstrate safety tips. 3rd graders and 5th graders collaborated to help build this house.
6. Ship Safety- a ship’s crew was interviewed by our own Hannah Moore, she found out about the tools, safety drills, and lifeboat procedures on a large ship during hurricane season.
7. A simulated airplane ride into the eye of the hurricane- under a table made into an airplane
8. Eye of the Hurricane-A Lego village built by 2nd graders, then the third and fourth graders added details to make it look like a hurricane had come through, including evacuation routes and floods.
