Rockwall ISD is saddened by the passing of Cain Middle School’s namesake, Maurine Williamson Cain yesterday.

Mrs. Cain’s funeral will be held on Monday, June 23 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church (610 S. Goliad, Rockwall, TX 75087).

Mrs. Cain spent 34 years teaching at Rockwall ISD schools before retiring in 1987. She will be missed by our district and community.

Maurine Williamson Cain passed away Thursday, June 19, 2014, at Broadmoor Medical Lodge where she had been a resident for a little over a year. She celebrated her 95th birthday there on May 27th with family, friends and members of the Broadmoor staff.

The youngest of five children, Maurine was born in Forney, Texas, and into the loving home of Jim and Grace (Burch) Williamson. The family lived in Chisholm, Texas, just south of Rockwall County for many years; the white frame farm house still stands. They later relocated to property in Rockwall which is now the site of McDonalds on I-30.

As a child, Maurine, her three brothers and one sister along with their parents enjoyed playing baseball in the front yard. Her well-known skills as both a Checker and Forty-Two player were no doubt cultivated at an early age when many lively and competitive games were played with family. Her dad farmed and her mother was known for her beautiful handwork and delicious homemade jams and jellies.

Attending all twelve grades in Rockwall schools, Maurine graduated from Rockwall High School in 1936. Following graduation, she studied two years at Texas Military College in Terrell, Texas, and will forever be grateful to her late brother Clifford Williamson and his wife Elva Perry Williamson for providing this invaluable first step into higher education. Maurine continued her education at East Texas State Teachers College (Texas A&M University Commerce) where she ultimately earned both her Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees.

Eager to teach, Maurine began her thirty-eight year career at Scurry Rosser High School and later taught at Quinlan High School.

Her long association with Rockwall schools began in 1942 in the one-room school known as Locust Grove Community School, south of downtown Rockwall near what is now The Shores. She taught all seven grades by herself and also acted as school janitor, cook, and nurse. The last thirty-four consecutive years of her career were spent teaching various grade levels at Rockwall Elementary School and later Dobbs Elementary School. She retired in 1987.

On June 8, 1941, Maurine married Rockwall native, Ted Cain, in Holdenville, Oklahoma. Ted was sent overseas to serve in World War II one year after they married. Like so many other young couples at the time, the next three and one-half years were very difficult. Maurine taught school and worked at the defense plant in Garland, Texas.

Ted and Maurine were most always together and celebrated seventy years of marriage before Ted died on December 18, 2012.

Maurine considered it a very distinct privilege when the Rockwall Independent School District Board of Education voted to name a new school in her honor. Maurine Cain Middle School was dedicated on Sunday, October 17, 1999. Prior to the dedication ceremony, she enjoyed watching the school construction take place, and later loved being invited to “her” school for pep-rallies, awards ceremonies and other special events. She continued to enjoy having this association with students and teachers well into her 80’s.

Always actively involved as a member of First Baptist Church Rockwall and the Ruth Sunday School Class, Maurine loved her church family dearly. She also enjoyed membership in Sigma Tau Delta, Alpha Chi, and Texas State Teachers Association

One of Mrs. Cain’s favorite quotes was, “you never stand taller than when you stoop to help a child.” Countless children respected and succeeded under the guidance of this inspirational Rockwall educator. Maurine Cain, standing almost six feet tall “in her stocking feet” was always willing to stoop to help the next child.

Maurine is survived by one son, Dewayne Cain and his wife Ann Atkins Cain. Two grandchildren, Amy Cain Cox and husband, Wendell Cox, Chris Cain and fiancée, Ami Wester and three great grandchildren, Jackson Cox, Johnny Cox and Annie Cox.
