Billie Stevenson Elementary hosted the First Annual Fate DPS Bike Safety Rally this past Saturday and it was a HUGE success! The coolest thing about the whole event was that it was the brainchild of one of their own third grade Cubs, Gage Duke. Stevenson staff met with Gage last year soon after school started. He was concerned that so many students were riding to school without wearing helmets. Gage shared his very personal story of how his older cousin was struck by a car while riding his bike to school; it’s possible his life could have been saved had he been wearing a helmet. In memory of his cousin, Gage is spreading the message of the importance of wearing bicycle helmets “EVERY TIME” and asked if we could organize a Safety Rally to help his efforts.Working closely with our Student Resource Officer from the Fate DPS, John Kissane, and all of us at Stevenson, Gage’s family helped to plan and organize the event. Part of the Rally included a helmet safety check where Gage’s mom and others helped to make sure that ALL riders had appropriately fitted helmets – going so far as providing helmets to those who did not have one.
Gage’s dream came true and the event was AWESOME! We’re excited to carry on the tradition for years to come, and helping Gage in educating our students about the importance of wearing a helmet while bicycling. Our school is full of leaders and students of all ages who are ready to take the lead in making a difference in the world.
