RHS Jacket Backers April Athletes of the Month

Congratulations to RHS Jacket Backers April Athletes of the Month Chika Iwuamadi and Austin Shumake.
Listed below are all of the outstanding accomplishments made by these athletes during the month of April.

  • Chika IwuamadiSenior – Track & FieldChika was a key member of the varsity girls 3rd District Championship in four years. She qualified for area in the 4x200 relay, the 4x400 relay and the 400m dash. At area, she qualified for regionals in all three again. At regionals, Chika broke her PR and school record that she set last year. In the prelims, she broke her record, and less than 24 hours later, took another second off her time to finish the 400m dash in 54.53. Both were accomplished after running the 4x200 relay just 15 minutes prior. Chika won the regional championship in the 400m dash, and qualified for state in the 4x400 relay as well. Quote from Coach McCrary"Chika is a very valuable piece in the success of our program. Athletes like her don’t come around very often. Her work ethic is one that many of our young athletes try to imitate. She leads by example each and every day. Chika was asked to do the ‘impossible’ this year; run the 4x200 and the 400m dash, which are very close in the event schedule. This was in addition to running the 4x400 relay. Chika was up for the challenge and succeeded in the combination. She is headed to state in her final meet as an RHS Lady Jacket, and I know she will go ALL OUT!”

  • Austin Shumake, Senior – Track & Field: At the district meet, Austin qualified for post season track for the first time in four years. He competed at the area meet on April 20th in The Woodlands. Austin is the example for JFND. In three previous seasons, he had never advanced past the district meet. This season Austin had some training partners that helped push him every day in practice. Because of his work ethic in practice and never giving up, he was able to accomplish his goal of going post district. Quote from Coach McCrary"Austin is going to be missed. He was a major part of our men’s distance program and he was the ‘bell cow’ for the younger athletes. He was a mentor and supporter of all kids, both boys and girls, in our distance program. Austin will be attending Dallas Baptist University to continue his cross country and track careers."

Jacket Backers Making a Difference in Student’s Lives

The Rockwall Jacket Backer Student Scholarship Program provides financial support to graduating student athletes who meet the eligibility requirements as defined by the association. The purpose of the Student Scholarship Fund is to recognize senior students currently involved in Rockwall ISD-sponsored athletic teams and athletic training who exhibit excellent performance in the class room and dedication to community service.  Recently, the Jacket Backers received a thoughtful email from a Rockwall High School Alumni and recipient of a 2014 scholarship.

Rebecca Voth, a former RHS Varsity Swimmer utilized her scholarship from the Jacket Backers while she was at Baylor University. The funds helped her with book costs and her cap and gown for graduation.  Ms. Voth will be graduating with a Bachelor of Arts with concentrations in Political Science, International Studies, Spanish and Philosophy.  She is contemplating either teaching English in Mexico on a Fulbright Scholarship or attending Pepperdine Law School on a full ride scholarship.  She gives credit to the Jacket Backers. “None of these opportunities I have would have been possible without the generous support of groups like Jacket Backers that allowed me to pursue the incredible education I received at Baylor and graduate debt-free. Stories like this one, demonstrate how the Jacket Backers organization makes a difference in the lives of RHS students.?

The Jacket Backer Booster Club is a non-profit association formed to maximize fundraising efforts for Rockwall High School sports, and other charitable activities that promote the development of good character, high morale, maximum effort, and the highest standards of sportsmanship, competitive spirit, pride, and community service.  It's a GREAT time to be a Jacket Backer!  For more information on how you can join the Jacket Backers and help other great Jackets or Lady Jackets visit https://www.jacketboosters.com/ or email Shelley Born at shelley@mibcpa.com

Quote from Coach Acosta, “Darryan has been a player that we have been incredibly excited about since she arrived her freshman year. She has grown and developed each year and is really showing that she is at the top of her game as a senior. Darryan is a player that both her coaches and her teammates can depend on to get the job done no matter the stakes. Her consistency and power at the plate and defensively is undeniable but her growth as a leader has been most impressive. We appreciate all of the work she puts towards improving her game and all that she contributes to the team.”
