Duck sales underway at rockwallduckrace.org

Get ready to shake your tail feathers, because the Rockwall Rubber Duck Regatta will return to the Harbor Saturday, Sept. 24 to make a splash for its 5thanniversary.

The Regatta serves as a fundraiser for local organizations Meals on Wheels Senior Services of Rockwall County and Boys and Girls Club of Rockwall County. Contributing to the cause and enjoying the all-day, family-friendly event doesn’t mean you’ll see a big bill: ducks are available for purchase at rockwallduckrace.org for just $5. On the day of the event, participants can root for their little yellow friends as the ducks race down the Harbor fountain and cross the finish line.

Brenda Cross, who is helping to coordinate the event, said keeping participation economical has always been one of her primary goals when organizing the Regatta.

“By keeping the cost of the ducks at $5, we thought it would be affordable for everyone in Rockwall County to participate,” Cross said.

Owners of the top three lucky duckies that speed across the finish line first will be awarded prizes. The first place winner will receive a $1,000 Visa gift card, second place will receive a $500 Kroger gift card, and third place will receive a $250 Visa gift card.

Businesses can purchase and decorate corporate ducks for $100. Allen Lea will judge the most creative ducks that are sure to quack everyone up, and the winning business will receive a trophy. County Judge David Sweet will also give out the Judge’s Choice Award.

The event will feature about 75 vendor booths and live music. Cross said this year’s stage is sponsored by Texan Theatre Greenville.

At press time, other event sponsors include the City of Rockwall, Baylor Scott & White Lake Pointe, Southwest KIA, Hanby Insurance, Blue Ribbon News, Signature Signs & Graphics, Honda Cars of Rockwall, Berry Family Services, DeStefano Remodeling, Rockwall Police Department, Kroger, Farmers Electric Cooperative, Graves Roofing and Restoration, Citywide, Rockwall Economic Development Corporation, Home Instead Senior Care, Raspa Patron, American Engineering Consultants, American National Bank, Bright Snacks, City of Royse City, Cosmopolitan Lady Maid Service, Graves Landscaping, Jackson Automotive, Makersspace, Oncor, Housewarmers, Selfies on Canvas, and State Farm.

Due to space constraints, Cross said the 5k fun run would not return this year. However, the ever-popular glow-in-the-dark ducks aren’t going anywhere. After sunset, the Glow Duck Race will light up the lake with hundreds of miniature, neon quackers. The top three ducks in the Glow Race will receive the same prizes as their yellow counterparts.

The Regatta wouldn’t be possible, Cross said, without City of Rockwall employees volunteering their time to ensure smooth sailing.

“The City Council has always supported us every year,” Cross said. “They get in the water and wrangle the ducks to the finish line. They’ve always been a part of the Regatta since the very beginning, and we are very thankful for the city to back us and support us the way they have.”

Despite this year’s event lasting one day instead of two, Cross said she still hopes to see flocks of Rockwall citizens supporting their community at the Regatta.

“Every year it has grown, and we really want this year to be big,” Cross said. “It’s important for Rockwall County because these two organizations are such a vital part of our community. They really benefit the youth of the community and the elderly of the community: a wide spectrum.”

Don’t be a lame duck, waddle your way over to the Harbor for some fundraising and fun times.

Rockwall YMCA Angel Camp 2016

(ROCKWALL, TX – AUGUST 12, 2016) While there’s still time to enjoy all the summer activities happening at the J.E.R. Chilton YMCA at Rockwall, preparations are well underway for a myriad of fall programs for you and your family.  Swim lessons and group exercise classes continue as the registration deadline nears for fall sports and Adventure Guides.

“BEST OF” Awards

The J.E.R. Chilton YMCA at Rockwall is honored to have earned not one but four "BEST OF" awards, thanks to many votes of confidence from our community.

"We couldn't be more excited that readers of Living Magazine voted us the Best Health Club/Gym, Best Yoga Studio, Best Pilates Class, and Best Camp for Kids!" said Executive Director Bonnie LaVielle. "As our members know, we are so much more than a gym; we are a community center, and we are family. Thanks to everyone who voted and helped make this recognition possible."

Angel Camp Celebration

Angel Campers and their families gathered for dinner and dancing at the J.E.R. Chilton YMCA at Rockwall gymnasium Saturday, July 30, to celebrate the end of another very special summer day camp.

The banquet included music by DJ Julie Mac of KSCS, dinner and dessert by Dodie's Cajun Diner at The Harbor and Nothing Bundt Cakes, and party decorations by Wally's Party Factory. Rockwall Mayor Jim Pruitt addressed the crowd and Rockwall County District Attorney Kenda Culpepper helped present awards like "Best Laugh," "Most Curious," and "Best Hugs" to more than two dozen local youth with special needs.

Under the direction of Director Melissa Cotner and several camp counselors, the Angel Campers have enjoyed a summer of horseback riding, bowling, swimming, and field trips - including a ride aboard Seawolf on Lake Ray Hubbard, courtesy of Captain Scott Self and Sail with Scott.

Cotner has been Angel Camp director at the YMCA for the past 5 years, and said

she plans to continue next year. "It's my purpose in life," Cotner said. "It is truly an experience that changes the people who work with the kids. I've never had a staff member who didn't have a different outlook on life as a whole after working at Angel Camp. I love to see the impact it has on the kids and on the counselors."

Names 'Best Orthodontist' by Living Magazine

(ROCKWALL, TX – Aug 1, 2016) Dr. Bart Miller and the staff at Rockwall Crossing Orthodontics wish to thank their patients, friends, family and the community for voting them BEST ORTHODONTIST in Living Magazine’s 2016 Readers Choice Awards.

The practice is located inside Rockwall’s refurbished Missouri-Kansas-Texas train station, situated one block south of the post office.  The “Katy” green building at 711 S. Goliad St. has been designated as a historic landmark by the Rockwall County Historical Foundation.

Patients all ages are treated to friendly, old-fashioned service combined with the latest in orthodontic care.

“The best part about being in the orthodontic business is getting to know the people in the community, while helping them achieve beautiful, healthy smiles,” Dr. Bart said. “Since the average treatment time for full braces is two years, I get to see children and their parents on a regular basis, and over time, we develop real friendships. It’s like family. That’s the kind of history that’s really special.”

Bart was born and raised in Rockwall, graduating from Rockwall High in 1986. He attended Northwestern University and graduated from Rice University in 1990 – majoring in Spanish “because I enjoyed it,” he said.

Like his father, Dr. Frank Miller, Bart joined the U.S. Navy. He was commissioned as Surface Warefare Officer, accepted into the Naval Nuclear Propulsion program, and served on board the guided-missile cruiser, USS Truxtun, stationed in Washington state. Following his service, he started dental school at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, completing his residency at Baylor College of Dentistry.

“At one point I thought about being a veterinarian,” Dr. Bart said. “I was in ROTC, I had my pre-med stuff done, and I went into nuclear propulsion. But I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do. I talked to a lot of people, and nobody ever really jumped up and down about what they did. I realized my dad LOVED what he did – and it looked more and more appealing to me.”

Dr. Bart has been practicing at Rockwall Crossing Orthodontics for the past 13 years. He credits his wife for encouraging him to pursue a career in orthodontics.

“Just do it,” she told me. “I love my wife. She’s the reason for all my success,” he smiled. Dr. Bart and Sandi have been married 23 years and have three children – Wyatt, Grant, and Josie.

Dr. Bart has served on the board of the Rockwall Family YMCA, the RISD Education Foundation, and the Rotary Club. He was even recognized as the Rockwall YMCA’s 2012 Father of the Year, an honor he says comes from being raised by great parents.

For a free consultation or to schedule an appointment, call 972-771-1117, visit RockwallCrossingOrthodontics.com, or drop by the dental depot to say hello and experience a bit of Rockwall history.

Multiple "Best Of" awards by Living Magazine

(ROCKWALL, TX – August 1, 2016) The J.E.R. Chilton YMCA at Rockwall is honored to have earned not one but four “BEST OF” awards, thanks to many votes of confidence from our community.

“We couldn’t be more excited that readers of Living Magazine voted us the Best Health Club/Gym, Best Yoga Studio, Best Pilates Class, and Best Camp for Kids!” said Executive Director Bonnie LaVielle. “As our members know, we are so much more than a gym; we are a community center, and we are family. Thanks to everyone who voted and helped make this recognition possible.”

The Rockwall Y’s newly renovated facility features a 12,000 sq. ft. addition, which includes a 6,000 sq. ft. cardio and free-weights workout area with state-of-the-art equipment, spacious locker rooms and showers, and a large Welcome Center and lobby. There is also a gymnasium and aerobics room, and brand new cycling studio. The expanded child watch area allows parents the convenience of working out while their children are cared for. The Y’s multipurpose room serves as a place for Board meetings, community functions and senior luncheons.

As remarkable as the facility is, Executive Director Bonnie LaVielle is quick to point out that the building is just a tool to fulfill the mission of the Y: to put Christian values into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. Financial aid and scholarships are available to help ensure that no one is turned away from participating in Y programs due to inability to pay.

From group exercise classes and personal training to water fitness and swim lessons in the indoor pool, the JER Chilton YMCA offers health and wellness activities for all ages and abilities. Group exercise classes are included with membership, and participants enjoy a beautiful view of the YMCA grounds, thanks to the installation of a large window in the Group Exercise Room.

The Y’s youth sports programs include flag football, cheerleading, volleyball, baseball, T-ball, soccer, and basketball. Dedicated coaches help young athletes improve their skills, while being the best they can be off the field as well. Each child gets a chance to play in a safe, fun and exciting environment encouraging fair play, a positive atmosphere and family involvement. Best of all, there are no tryouts so all kids are welcome to play.

Teen programming includes a statewide, civic engagement program known as Youth & Government, giving high school and middle school students hands-on experience in the mechanics of the state legislative and judicial process.

Aquatics programs include everything from the Riptides competitive swim team to Family Swim, Senior Splash, LapSwim and AquaZumba. Plus, swim lessons are available for all ages; and the indoor pool is a great place to celebrate a private birthday party or other special occasion.

Summer camps, Angel Camp for children with special needs, and the Adventure Guides programs for fathers and their children are just some of the additional programs available through the Y that help nurture youth, build bonds, and strengthen families and the community.

Executive Director Bonnie LaVielle’s door is always open, and she invites everyone in the community to stop by, take a tour, ask questions, and get involved. To learn more, call 972-772-9622 or got to jerchiltonymca.org. For up-to-the-minute updates, follow the JER Chilton YMCA on Facebook and Twitter (@YMCARockwall).

Mathnasium of Rockwall-Heath

(ROCKWALL/HEATH, TX – August 1, 2016) Mathnasium of Rockwall-Heath is honored to have been voted ‘Best Tutoring Center’ in Living Magazine’s 2016 Readers Choice Awards. Owners Bob and Becky Barnes thank the community for its support.

When Bob and Becky first opened the Mathnasium franchise in Rockwall nearly six years ago, they never imagined the overwhelmingly positive impact the learning center would have on local children in terms of excelling in math. They soon outgrew their original space and last year relocated to a larger facility at the intersection of Goliad Street and Ralph Hall Parkway.

“I think Becky and I both agree that this has been the single most rewarding thing that we have ever done in our 30 years being in business together,” said Bob, who holds a Master’s degree in Education and taught sixth grade straight out of college. Becky also has a lengthy teaching history and taught for over 20 years prior to opening Mathnasium.

Becky said that the passion for teaching that she and her husband share helps them develop close bonds with their students, and their almost ministerial-type approach to helping kids learn math has led to a lot of success for Mathnasium and its students.

“It is so rewarding to watch these students progress as they increase their mathematical understanding, which in turn increases their confidence in their abilities,” Becky said. “When they begin to connect the dots, they actually come to enjoy math.”

So just what is the Mathnasium Method, and how has it become so effective at helping kids excel?

According to Bob, it all has to do with explaining math in such a way that kids can grasp the concept. Since adults are much more adept at thinking abstractly than children, helping them to understand math – an often complex and abstract subject – is all about explaining it in such a way that a child’s mind can comprehend it.

“It starts to make sense when you explain to them how and why Math works,” Bob said. “One of the things that’s really important to Mathnasium, to us and to kids is that they develop what we call Number Sense: the ability to look at numbers, take them apart and put them together in a variety of ways. We want them to think of numbers as building blocks to things that they need to do.”

Bob and Becky said they fully support the Rockwall ISD and its incredibly hardworking teachers. They can also appreciate the difficulties that can come with teaching in the typical classroom environment.

“At Mathnasium, we have the luxury of spending an hour of one-on-one time with each student, which can be difficult to achieve in classrooms where teachers must work within time constraints and thus may not be able to spend as much individual time as they would like with their students,” Becky said.

“Whenever I sit down with someone and they are clueless about what they’re working on, we talk about it and work through it together,” Becky said.  ”The light bulb comes on and they say, ‘I get it!’  I get chills every time I think about it, because they went from a complete lack of understanding about what to do, to understanding what they’ve done, and being able to apply it to something else.  Now, that’s exciting.”
